Chapter Nineteen
Kameron was guarding the door to Robertaâs suite. She took a half-step back to let Ellie inside and closed the door before retaking her position in front of it, her legs shoulder-width apart and her arms crossed over her chest. Paulâs second-in-command was a lovely young woman from New Orleans. She had dark brown skin, long eyelashes and expressive eyes, and a confident stance that did most of the talking for her. Kameron leaned closer to Ellie to whisper, âThese people are insane. Maybe you can talk some sense into them?â
Robertaâs beautiful suite was a mess. Someone had raided the fridge, and a motley assortment of drinks and snacks were scattered across the low tables as if a group of hungry preschoolers had been left to make their own lunches. Crumbs were everywhere. Someone had dropped a muffin on the carpet and stepped on it, leaving a pointy heel indent behind. There was a long dark streak of something liquid on the back of one of the tufted velvet chairs. Was that chocolate? Howard sat in a wingback chair in the corner of the parlor, staring at a book with an expression made of stone. Eustacia and Charlotte were arguing near the big panorama window, gesturing vigorously with their arms as they spoke. Just as Ellie stepped into the parlor, Eustacia swung her hand around to slap the younger woman. Charlotte dodged the older womanâs hand like it was nothing. She shouted a string of curses and pulled her arm back as if ready to punch Eustacia in the chest.
âLadies!â Kameron strode forward to stand between them. âI will not tell you again. You were invited to wait here in comfort for our chief of security to come and address you. But if you cannot behave yourselves, I will take you to the brig where you can wait this out in less comfortable accommodations.â She pointed at Eustacia. âMaâam. I need you to sit. There.â She pointed at an empty chair.
âBut-â Eustacia began.
âDonât make me restrain you.â Kameron sounded eager, and Eustacia beat a hasty retreat toward the chair and dropped into it with a wary glance. Kameron pointed to an empty chair across the room. âMs. Picklewick. That chair is for you. Sit.â
âRoman,â Charlotte whined. But Roman was over in the dining room looking through Robertaâs brass telescope. He ignored the commotion. Charlotte said, âDid you hear that woman? She threatened me! And I wonât be threatened.â
âKameron isnât kidding,â Ellie called over, her voice cheerful. âShe has two black belts, that I know of, and she is very effective at tying people up. Iâve seen her do it before.â
Charlotte shot Ellie a surprised look and bolted for the unoccupied chair. She flung herself into its velvet embrace and shut her mouth with a snap.
Stan and Charles, the two consultants, sat in the dining room. They spoke in voices too low to hear. Pieter, Morganâs young business associate, was playing a game of solitaire at the other end of the table.
